Steve Marriell - Nighttime Operations Manager
Steve Marriell has scheduled nighttime work at Sweeping Corp of America for 37 years. When he started, he built every route by hand with magnetic labels on a display case in the driver's room. Then he drove to the Delaware office and rebuilt the board there, every week. A later routing program sped things up, but it still made him move each job manually.
Steve now builds routes for Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania and Newark, Delaware from one screen. He duplicates routes from week to week, shifts work between the two shops when staffing changes, and rebuilds the night when drivers call out. The night before this interview, two drivers called out with no replacements. Steve readjusted the routes at the start of his shift.
He sees where drivers are and when they clock in and out of each job. He spots timing problems, reroutes around noise ordinances, and plans routes that keep drivers out of illegal U turns. He spends the time he saves with his drivers, checking their work.
