Inside SCA's Last Mile - Routing Around Real World Limits
The shortest route is rarely the right one.
Steve Marriell schedules around noise ordinances. Some lots cannot be swept until a certain hour, and he needs to see the clock on every stop before he commits the night.
SCA holds routes to a ten hour ceiling. Not because ten is a nice number, because eleven and twelve hour nights are how drivers get hurt.
Equipment sets limits too. An older truck stays on the central route. Send it forty miles out and a breakdown becomes a tow bill and a night of work nobody covers.
Multi depot routing keeps overlapping stops with the site that should own them. Six drivers in Philadelphia and eight in Wilmington stop being two separate problems.
